Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Designer

One of the joys of being a designer is not experiencing the same day twice. Every day is different, with a plethora of activities and tasks to fill the day, depending on the type of project and which stage it is at. An interior designer will generally juggle several projects at a time, allowing for a constant cross flow of information, requiring progression. Whatever form the projects take on a given day, a key component of the job is communication.

Welcome to the whirlwind world of hospitality design, where no two days are ever alike. At BOXX Design Studio, each day presents a fresh canvas of challenges, inspirations, and triumphs as we work tirelessly to craft unforgettable experiences for our clients. This blog is intended to take you through a typical day in the life of a hospitality designer and share our process with you.

Morning: Embracing the Creative Chaos

As the sun rises, so too does our studio.

Gone are the days of rushing through the morning commute; instead, we relish the opportunity to start the day on our own terms. With a cup of coffee in hand and the hum of our computers filling the air, we dive headfirst into a kaleidoscope of activities, each one bringing us closer to our ultimate goal: delivering exceptional design solutions that captivate and inspire.

Most Mornings begin with a short team recap of what the studio priorities are and each persons responsibilities and deadlines for that day. This is usually a short snappy conversation, just to ensure we havent missed a critical development in one of our projects as they tend to move at pace!

An interior designer will generally juggle several projects at a time, allowing for a constant cross flow of information, requiring progression. Whatever form the projects take on a given day, a key component of the job is communication. Whether sketching an internal view, detailing a joinery element or specifying a finish, the job heavily revolves around releasing information in different ways to best achieve the end result.

Mid-Morning: Navigating the Design Landscape

The morning is a flurry of activity as we juggle multiple projects, each at its own unique stage of development. From sketching out initial concepts to refining design details, every task requires a delicate balance of creativity, problem-solving, and communication. Whether we're collaborating with our team or meeting with clients, technology serves as our ally, enabling us to share ideas, demonstrate concepts, and bring our visions to life with unparalleled clarity.

It has become almost essential to have the power of screen sharing to demonstrate ideas, concepts and drawing progression, on screen. Conversely, when the right opportunity presents itself, there is nothing more worthwhile than visiting a site in person and watching a scheme emerge in front of you. Future issues are also easier to foresee when visiting a site in person and solutions come about much more fluidly when discussed with team members while strolling around the site.

Afternoon: Unleashing Creativity

After a well-deserved lunch break, we return to our workstations refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to tackle the afternoon's challenges with renewed vigor and a fresh coffee in hand. Research shows that the early afternoon is the ideal time for creative thinking, and we take full advantage of this golden hour to let our imaginations run wild. From digital drawings to hand sketches, we explore every avenue of design, guided by our passion for creativity and our commitment to excellence.

Although most of our drawings are digital, nothing beats sketching with pen, paper and plenty of tracing paper. Music always helps take you into the mindset to produce the best designs. This process however is accelerated in a team setting where ideas can be gleaned from colleagues. Articulating ideas come in stages. First, we come up with a concept and material palette discussed with the client. This evolves into some 2D plans where spaces are organised. Once resolved, we often produce 3D visuals to help communicate the design to our clients, before moving on to the detailed design where all elements of a scheme are relayed into individual drawings that tell each trade and artisan what their scope of work entails.

Late Afternoon: Bringing Ideas to Life

As the day draws to a close, we take stock of our accomplishments and prepare for the tasks that lie ahead. Whether we're organizing our workload for the following day or attending to administrative tasks that were neglected during the course of the day, we do so with a sense of purpose and determination. And as we tentatively log off, we do so with the knowledge that there is always more work to be done, but also with the excitement of knowing that tomorrow brings new opportunities for our creative visions to come to life.

No two days are the same working in design studio, and thats what makes it so great!
